New or used: which grade do you need?
| Grade | What it is | Pick it for | From (20ft · 40ft) |
|---|---|---|---|
| New (one-trip) | Made recently and shipped once with cargo, then sold: straight panels and clean paint, maybe a scuff from handling | Conversions, offices and anything where looks matter | $2,750 · $3,900 (high cube) |
| Cargo worthy (CW) | Retired from ocean service but still wind & watertight and sound enough to pass the CSC safety exam for sea transport; dents and rust spots are part of it | Storage you might ship goods in or resell later | $1,550 · $2,060 |
| Wind & watertight (WWT) | Retired from ocean service; keeps out wind and rain and the doors seal, but it isn’t rated to carry cargo at sea | Storage on your land for the least money | $1,400 · $1,900 |
A container that just sits on your land as storage rarely needs more than wind & watertight; pay the cargo worthy premium only if it might go back to sea or be resold. Container grades explained.
Where we take requests
Anywhere in the 48 contiguous states; Alaska and Hawaii aren’t covered. Each seller prices delivery from its depot, typically $300–$600 when you’re near one, and sets the date, usually 3–7 business days after you accept. That’s why every price on this page is a starting price until sellers have quoted your address.
Local depot prices: Houston, TX · Dallas–Fort Worth, TX · Los Angeles–Long Beach, CA · Chicago, IL · San Antonio, TX · Tampa, FL · Nashville, TN · Denver, CO · Phoenix, AZ · Kansas City, MO and KS · Detroit, MI · New York and Newark.
Shipping containers under $1,000?
Rarely, and not with a guarantee: this week the only sub-$1,000 listings we found from large national sellers were containers sold as-is. Our lowest starting price is $1,400, for a used 20ft wind & watertight container, before delivery. Be wary of whole containers advertised far below that, especially when the seller asks for a deposit by wire, gift card or payment app: warning signs on our price guide.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the best place to buy a shipping container?
From a seller with a depot near you, so delivery stays affordable. Before you pay, get three things in writing: the grade (one-trip, cargo worthy or wind & watertight), the delivered price with sales tax, and the delivery date. The same applies whether you call it a shipping, storage or freight container. How buying works here.
How much does a shipping container cost?
This week, a used 20ft starts at $1,400 and a new one at $2,750; a used 40ft starts at $1,900 and a new 40ft high cube at $3,900, all before delivery. See 20ft container prices, 40ft container prices, small containers or the full price guide.
How much do several shipping containers cost?
Multiply the starting price by the number you need: this week, four used 20ft containers start at $5,600 and twelve at $16,800, before delivery. For a multi-container order, send one quote request, and sellers near you quote a delivered total for the whole order.
Is a conex box the same as a shipping container?
Yes. In the US, “conex” is a common name for a steel shipping container; the word comes from an old US Army container system. Conex boxes, storage containers and cargo containers are names for the same steel boxes, and our 20ft and 40ft models follow standard ISO sizes. What a conex box is.
Do I need a permit to put a shipping container on my property?
It depends on your city or county, and sometimes on your HOA. Some places treat a container as a storage building; others limit how long it can stay or where it can sit. Check before delivery: how to find your local rules.
Is a shipping container cheaper than a shed?
It depends on the shed. A used 20ft container gives you about 150 sq ft of lockable, weatherproof storage from $1,400 this week, plus delivery (typically $300–$600 near a depot). Compare that with shed quotes for the same floor area, foundation and assembly included. Container vs shed.
