40ft High Cube Double Door Shipping Container (New)

A 40ft high cube double door container, often called a tunnel container, is a 40-foot shipping container with full cargo doors at each end instead of one, standing 9′6″ (2.90 m) tall. Our starting price for a new (one-trip) unit is $4,800 this week before delivery and sales tax, $900 more than a new 40ft high cube that opens at one end only.

What a second set of doors changes on a 40ft

With doors at one end, the back wall of a 40ft sits almost 40 ft from the opening, and whatever went in first ends up behind everything else. Open the far end too, and no spot inside is more than about 20 ft from a door; each pair of doors is the same size as on a high cube with doors at one end.

  • Two separate spaces: a partition across the middle gives you two 20ft areas, 9′6″ high, each reached through its own doors. Ask for a quote if you want one fitted.
  • Pass-through loads: lumber, pipe and other long stock can go in one end and come out the other, and machinery or vehicles can be parked facing either door.
  • No wrong way round: since both ends open, the truck can set it down facing whichever direction your site allows, and you can load from both ends at once.

Double door or open side?

Pick the double door to reach both ends, split the space or pass long items through. Pick an open side container when the whole long side has to open, for example to load pallets by forklift along its length. A full open side costs far more this week: $11,480, against $4,800 for the double door.

The weekly price is for a new, one-trip box, built with both sets of doors at the factory and loaded with cargo once before being sold (what one-trip means).

Delivery

Away from the seller’s depot, delivery is usually priced by distance, about $4–$6 per mile. Leave clear ground in front of both ends, so either pair of doors can swing fully open once the container is down.

Frequently asked questions

Do shipping containers have doors at both ends?

A standard one doesn’t: its cargo doors are at one end, and the other end is a solid steel wall. Containers with doors at both ends are sold as double door or tunnel containers, like this one, while one that opens along a long side is an open side container. A shorter version exists too: the 20ft double door.

What are the dimensions of a 40ft double door container?

Outside, 40′ × 8′ × 9′6″ (12.19 × 2.44 × 2.90 m), the same box as any 40ft high cube; not every 40ft is a high cube, and a standard-height one is a foot lower, at 8′6″. Each pair of doors opens about 7′8″ × 8′6″ (2.34 × 2.59 m). Inside size and empty weight differ by manufacturer, so ask each seller for both. 40ft container dimensions.

How much is a 40ft double door container?

Prices for a new one start at $4,800 this week; delivery and sales tax come on top. The 38 depot offers we recorded ranged from $4,399 to $5,998, with a little over half at or below our price. With doors at one end only, a new 40ft high cube starts at $3,900. A used double door has no weekly price: ask for one, and work the locking bars at both ends before you accept it. On a tight budget, a used 40ft high cube with doors at one end starts at $1,980.
