Shipping Container Vents
Shipping containers come with a few small vents for airflow at sea; adding vents helps let heat and moisture out, which can cut down on condensation. Choose a louver vent kit for the wall or a turbine vent kit for the roof, starting at $104 this week, before delivery. A kit ordered with your container arrives with it. Fitting it means cutting into the steel: do it yourself, or ask us to quote the installation.
Illustrative image Louver or turbine vent?
- Louver vent: sits flush in the wall and has a screen to keep insects out; air moves through it passively.
- Turbine vent: goes on the roof; the wind spins the turbine and pulls warm, moist air out.

Frequently asked questions
Do shipping containers have vents?
Yes, a few small ones for airflow at sea. For storage on land, adding vents improves airflow.
Do vents stop condensation?
They help by letting heat and moisture out, but they don’t guarantee a dry container on their own.
How many vents does a shipping container need?
Sellers commonly sell them in pairs and suggest two for basic airflow, more for better airflow. Wall vents run from small plastic vents about 2½ × 8 in to 12 × 12 in metal louvers; roof turbines are larger, around 16 in across. Ask each seller how many vents come in its kit, and their size.
How are container vents installed?
A hole is cut in the wall (louver vent) or the roof (turbine vent), and the vent is fitted and sealed over it. If you’d rather not cut the steel yourself, ask for a quote for installation.
Does cutting a vent hole affect the guarantee?
Whether drilling or cutting the container to fit a lock box, vents or a roll-up door yourself affects its guarantee depends on the seller: check its quote, or ask, before you drill or cut. What to check in a quote.
