WWT: wind and watertight; CW: cargo worthy; new containers are one-trip. Depots: how many of the New York–Newark depots in our network listed that model and grade at the last price check. The 10ft, reefers, offices and modified units weren’t listed at these depots at the last price check, and the 40ft high cube open side can’t be matched to one of our two versions, so all of them keep their national starting price: all shipping containers.
Every New York–Newark “from” price is below our national starting price, by $390 to $1,040.

Where these containers come from
The three verified sellers in our network for the metro have depots listed in Newark and in New York City, and every price in the table comes from what they list, not from our national price. The $765 figure is what the Newark depot publishes for a nearby drop-off. Your request itself goes to up to 5 sellers serving your address, and we check each one’s licensing and insurance before it gets any.

Delivery across North Jersey and the five boroughs
From Newark, containers go to Jersey City, Hoboken, Elizabeth, Paterson and the rest of North Jersey, and across to Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Long Island and Westchester, with the mileage past the depot area added to the fee.
Delivery figures here are estimates from rates depots publish, about $4–$6 a mile by tilt-bed past the depot area; the fee in the quote you accept is the one you pay. What the truck needs on your lot: site checklist.
Sales tax: it depends which state it lands in
New Jersey has a single sales tax rate for the whole state, 6.625%. New York’s combined state and local rate is 8.875% in all five boroughs, 8.625% in Nassau County, 8.75% in Suffolk and 8.375% in most of Westchester, according to the state tax department’s rate table. On a used 40ft from $1,330, the difference between a Newark and a Brooklyn address comes to about $30.
Ask each seller to show the sales tax for your delivery address in its quote.
Street, sidewalk or your own lot
In New York City, a container set on the street or sidewalk is a city permit matter: the Department of Transportation lists a construction container among the temporary structures it permits there, generally for contractors who already hold a Department of Buildings permit. See NYC DOT street works permits. The DOT frames these permits around construction work, so for a container that’s simply for storage, plan on private property and check with the Department of Buildings first. In New Jersey, ask your town’s construction office before delivery; a co-op board or HOA may have its own say. What to ask: our permit guide.

Frequently asked questions
How much would 12 shipping containers cost in New York?
Twelve used 20ft boxes in wind and watertight grade come to $12,120 or more before delivery. Delivery is the bigger surprise here: at about $765 for each container delivered near the Newark depot, twelve add roughly $9,180, so ask for one quote covering all twelve deliveries, with sales tax on top.
Is there a container store in New York City?
Not the kind you walk into: if you’re after a shop that sells storage bins and closet systems, that’s a different business. Here you get quotes for steel shipping containers, new one-trip and used, from sellers serving Newark and New York City.
Where can I find shipping containers for sale in Upstate NY?
The depots behind this page are in Newark and New York City, so an Upstate address is a long haul from them. Request quotes the same way anyway, with your ZIP on a model page: they come from sellers serving your area, and the delivery in each one depends on how far that seller’s depot is. Sales tax there is the county’s combined rate from the state’s published table.
