Sources: US seller and maker spec sheets for the 6ft and 8ft minis; seller listings for the full-width 8ft; ISO 668 and carrier specifications for the 10ft and 20ft. Floor areas for the 6ft and the full-width 8ft are worked out from their inside sizes.

The 10ft is the shortest standard (ISO) container: the same 8-foot width as a 20ft, with full-size cargo doors. Anything shorter is made mainly for storage, either as a mini built at that size, narrower and lower than a standard box, or as a full-width box cut from a longer container (the two kinds of 8ft). Some sellers call anything up to a 20ft “small”.

What a small container costs

A new 10ft starts at $4,650 this week, before delivery and sales tax. The 8ft and the 6ft have no weekly price; sellers in our network quote them on request. Small doesn’t always mean cheap: that 10ft works out to about $65 per square foot of floor, against about $9 for a used 20ft ($1,400) and $18 for a new one ($2,750). If your site takes a 20ft, it gives more space for the money; a small box makes sense when the spot, the access or local rules leave no room for anything longer.

Getting a small container onto your site

A 10ft comes on the same tilt-bed truck as a 20ft and needs about the same 60–80 ft (18–24 m) of straight approach. Minis are lighter, about 1,000 to 2,000 lb empty, and have forklift pockets, so they can be set down by forklift in a parking space or a narrow yard; one maker’s 12ft mini needs a forklift or similar to unload. Ask each seller which truck it sends. Delivery cost and site checklist.

Do you need a permit for a small container?

Small doesn’t mean exempt. Some cities let you put up a small shed without a permit below a set floor area, but that exemption may not cover a container, so ask your city or county before delivery, and your HOA if you have one. How to check your local rules.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the smallest conex box you can buy?

Minis are made down to about 6 ft: one US seller’s 6ft measures about 6′ × 6′5″ × 6′3½″ outside, with a door about 6′1½″ wide and 5′4″ high, and weighs about 1,320 lb empty. Among standard (ISO) shipping containers, the shortest is the 10ft. The 8ft and the 10ft are listed here; for a 6ft, send a quote request.

How much does a small shipping container cost?

A new 10ft starts at $4,650 this week for the box, or about $4,950–$5,250 with delivery near the seller’s depot, before sales tax. The 8ft and the 6ft have no weekly price: sellers in our network that can supply one send a delivered price.

How much does a small shipping container weigh?

Empty, about 1,000–1,300 lb for a 6ft mini, about 1,500–2,000 lb (690–900 kg) for an 8ft mini and about 2,650–3,360 lb (1,200–1,520 kg) for a 10ft, depending on the maker. Each container’s own weight is marked on it.

Is a small conex box the same as a small shipping container?

Yes: sellers use both names for the same steel boxes, so a “small conex” listing is a 10ft or a shorter storage mini. What a conex box is.

Is a small container cheaper than a shed?

Not at small sizes. Below about 100 sq ft, a built shed costs about the same as a new 10ft, and a resin or kit shed costs less; what the container adds is steel, a lock and nothing to build. Shipping container vs shed: the costs.

Can I buy a small container used?

Yes, quoted on request: a used 10ft or a used 8ft. Used short boxes are scarce, since few sail in ocean fleets; the quotes will show whether a seller near you has one.

Room for more? 20ft containers, from $1,400 used. Every size, inside and out: shipping container dimensions.
