Permits in Kansas City, Missouri, and across the line
Kansas City, Missouri. The city’s building code (section 18-16) lets a one-story detached storage shed, playhouse, garage or similar building go without a building permit if its projected roof area is 200 square feet or less, and the city adds that such work must still meet its Zoning and Development Code. The rule is written for sheds, not containers. If the city treated a container the same way, a 20ft (about 160 square feet of roof) would fall under the line and a 40ft (about 320) over it; whether it does is for the Permits Division to say, and its Code Questions Hotline, (816) 513-1511, takes that kind of question.
Kansas City, Kansas, and the suburbs. In Kansas City, Kansas, permits go through the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas; we found no page of its rules on sheds or containers. Overland Park, Olathe, Independence, Lee’s Summit and the other suburbs each set their own, and an HOA can add more. Questions to ask: our permit guide.

Frequently asked questions
How much do 4 shipping containers cost?
Four used 40ft wind and watertight containers come to $6,440 at the Kansas City prices on this page, or $8,760 for four new one-trip 20ft. Each container is delivered at the depot’s fee, about $400 apiece near the depots, and sales tax is added; one quote request lets each seller price all four deliveries together.
Who does rent to own shipping containers?
Some container sellers do, and your request reaches the ones near you that offer it. Typically, you put down a deposit and pay delivery first, then spread the rest over 12 to 48 monthly payments, and the container becomes yours with the last one. The terms come in writing in the seller’s quote: rent-to-own.
How can I buy a used shipping container in Kansas City?
Pick a grade (wind and watertight for storage on your lot, or cargo worthy, fit to pass a CSC safety exam if it may ship again, with the exam itself not included), make sure a truck can reach your spot, then open the model page and enter your ZIP. Up to 5 sellers serving the metro send quotes with the delivered price and the date; you accept one, and you look the container over when it arrives. Step by step: how buying works.
