10ft Shipping Container (New, One-Trip)

A 10-foot shipping container, also sold as a 10ft conex box or storage container, is about 10 ft long, 8 ft wide and 8′6″ tall (3.05 × 2.44 × 2.59 m), with about 71 sq ft (6.6 m²) of floor inside. It’s the smallest standard shipping size; shorter 8ft boxes are made mainly for storage. New (one-trip) ones start at $4,650 this week, before delivery. That’s more than a new 20ft ($2,750), which gives you twice the space.

10 × 8, not 10 × 10: what you get in a 10ft

Standard shipping containers are all 8 ft wide, so there’s no standard “10 by 10” container: a 10ft is about 10 × 8 ft outside. Length varies a little by manufacturer, from 9′9¾″ to 10′ (2.99–3.05 m).

  • Floor: about 71 sq ft (6.6 m²) inside, on a footprint of about 80 sq ft (7.4 m²).
  • Space: about 540 cu ft (15.3 m³), a little under half a 20ft.
  • Doors: the same cargo doors as bigger containers, opening about 7′8″ × 7′6″ (2.34 × 2.28 m).
  • Good for: a narrow side yard, a small lot or a spot where a 20ft won’t fit.

This week our starting price comes from a single depot, so delivery can cost more if you’re far from it. Enter your ZIP and send a request: sellers that have one send you availability, a delivered price and a delivery date.

Looking for something smaller? An 8ft container comes as a narrower mini or a full-width box cut from a longer one, and is quoted on request; for a 6ft, send a quote request. Small containers side by side · all container sizes.

Why does a 10ft cost more than a 20ft?

This week a new 10ft starts at $4,650, $1,900 more than a new 20ft ($2,750) with about half the space. No seller publishes a breakdown, but the market around it is plain: 10ft containers are rarely used to ship cargo overseas, where 20ft and 40ft are the standard sizes, far fewer are in circulation, and some sold as 10ft are converted from 20ft containers. If you have the room, a new 20ft costs less, and a used 20ft starts at $1,400.

The price shown is for a new one-trip unit, made overseas and shipped once; ask for “one-trip” to be written on your quote, since the term has no legal definition (what one-trip means). A used 10ft is quoted on request.

Frequently asked questions

How wide is a 10ft shipping container?

Eight feet (2.44 m) outside and about 7′8½″ (2.35 m) between the walls inside, the same width as a 20ft or a 40ft. That’s why a 10ft is 10 × 8 ft, not 10 × 10.

What are the dimensions of a 10ft storage container?

Outside, about 10′ × 8′ × 8′6″ (3.05 × 2.44 × 2.59 m). Inside, about 9′3″ × 7′8½″ × 7′10″ (2.82 × 2.35 × 2.39 m), varying by manufacturer. The door opening is about 7′8″ × 7′6″ (2.34 × 2.28 m).

How much does a 10ft shipping container cost?

$4,650 this week for a new one-trip 10ft, before delivery and sales tax; a used one is priced in each seller’s quote. Why it costs more than a 20ft.

Is a 10ft conex box the same as a 10ft shipping container?

Yes. “Conex” is a common US name for a steel shipping container, so a 10ft conex box, sea container or storage container is the same 10 × 8 ft box.

What’s the smallest shipping container I can buy?

The smallest standard size is the 10ft: the ISO standard’s lengths start at 10 ft, and a new one starts at $4,650 this week before delivery and sales tax. Shorter boxes are made mainly for storage: the 8ft, quoted on request, and 6ft units you can ask for through a quote request. Small containers compared.

Do they make 10ft shipping containers?

Yes. ISO 668, the international container standard, lists a 10ft length, and the 10ft units on sale are typically 8′6″ tall. They’re far less common than 20ft and 40ft containers. A 9′6″ high cube version also exists; it isn’t listed here, so describe it in a quote request.

How many square feet is a 10ft container?

About 71 sq ft (6.6 m²) of floor inside, and about 80 sq ft (7.4 m²) of ground footprint.

How much does a 10ft container weigh?

About 2,650–3,360 lb (1,200–1,520 kg) empty, depending on the manufacturer.

Can I buy a used 10ft container?

Yes, on request: ask for a used 10ft, and sellers in our network that have one price it in their quotes. Used 10fts are scarce, so there’s no weekly price for one here. Some are cut down from a longer container, with a new end wall fitted, and can’t go back into shipping service; ask the seller whether yours was, and look over that end wall and its seams before you accept it. For lower-cost storage, a used 20ft starts at $1,400.

Is a 10ft container cheaper than a shed?

It depends on the shed. A 10ft container arrives in one piece, locks and needs no assembly, but at $4,650 before delivery this week, compare it with shed quotes for the same floor area. Shipping container vs shed.
